Do I need a monthly treatment?
For food-handling facilities, the minimum treatment frequency should generally be once per month.
Establishments with higher food or waste traffic, poor ventilation, enclosed spaces or neighbouring food-handling businesses may require additional treatments, especially during warmer or busier periods.
Routine pest programme or once-off treatment?
Although a once-off pest treatment is better than no treatment, once-off treatments are generally reactive and are often requested once pest populations are already out of control. With most pests, the number you see represents only a small portion of what remains hidden.
A routine programme provides a more proactive preventative approach. It allows us to monitor pest activity, use targeted applications, cycle between suitable pesticides and help overcome pest resistance.
Routine programmes may also provide access to discounted targeted services, including lawn treatments, termite control, bed bug treatments and selected pest-control products.
Can I do pest control myself?
You can perform certain pest-control tasks yourself, but successful pest management depends on correctly identifying the pest, understanding its behaviour and knowing where, when and what to apply.
Pests are often evasive, and the full extent of an infestation may not become visible until the problem is already severe. Incorrect treatments can also spread an infestation, reduce treatment effectiveness or make the problem more difficult to resolve.
Professional support is particularly important for commercial, hospitality and food-handling premises, where regulatory and hygiene requirements may also apply.
What are pesticide formulations?
A pesticide formulation describes how the active ingredient is packaged and delivered. Examples can include gels, liquids, dusts, baits, aerosols and specialised residual treatments.
Selecting the correct formulation helps ensure effective contact with the target pest while providing suitable residual protection between treatments.
The correct choice will depend on the pest, the treatment area, environmental conditions and the level of activity.
Is pest resistance or resilience a real concern?
Yes. Pest populations can gradually develop resistance to certain pesticides or active ingredients, particularly when the same treatment is repeatedly used.
A planned pest-management programme may therefore include the responsible cycling of active ingredients, the use of suitable formulations and, where appropriate, approved synergists that help improve treatment effectiveness.
How often is rodent control needed?
At a minimum, an effective quarterly treatment is generally recommended to monitor rodent activity, keep bait stations clean and replenished, and maintain bait effectiveness.
More frequent servicing may be necessary where there is increased food or waste traffic, recurring rodent activity, nearby vegetation, poor building proofing or other environmental pressures.
What is secondary non-target poisoning?
Secondary non-target poisoning occurs when an animal that was not intended to be affected consumes poisoned prey.
For example, a rodent may consume rodenticide bait and later be eaten by a predator such as an owl, hawk, domestic cat or other animal. The predator may then also be exposed to the poison.
Responsible rodent management must therefore consider bait placement, product selection, secure bait stations, monitoring and the protection of wildlife, pets and other non-target species.
Are there rodent-control methods besides bait stations?
Yes. Effective rodent control may involve a combination of secure bait stations, mechanical traps, monitoring devices, sanitation, vegetation management and physical exclusion.
Exclusion includes locating and sealing gaps, openings and other building entry points. These methods can require more labour and planning, but they are an important part of long-term rodent management.
How quickly can a rodent infestation develop?
Rodent populations can increase rapidly when food, water and shelter are readily available.
- A female rodent may produce several litters in one year.
- A pregnancy cycle can last approximately 18–22 days.
- An average litter may contain approximately 6–12 offspring.
- Under favourable conditions, one female may produce roughly 56 offspring in a year.
Early detection and ongoing monitoring are therefore important, particularly in food, hospitality, storage and commercial environments.
