Bats are valuable members of the natural environment and play an important role in controlling insect populations. They are not pests in the same sense as rodents or cockroaches, and responsible bat management should focus on humane exclusion rather than poisoning or indiscriminate removal. Problems generally arise when bats begin roosting inside roof spaces, wall cavities, eaves, chimneys or other parts of a building.
A bat colony can create noise, odour and accumulations of droppings beneath roosting areas. Entry points may also allow rainwater, insects or other animals into the structure. In hospitality, residential and commercial properties, visible bat activity may concern occupants, employees or guests. The challenge is to remove the bats without trapping them inside, separating mothers from dependent young or harming the colony.
